on being proactive

i love when stats actually back up what someone w/ half a brain can figure out.  turns out, abstinence only sex ed. is doing a bang up job (no pun intended) on knocking out teen pregnancy…especially in texas.  (shock!)  i hope you are catching my sarcasm…i would hate to waste all this smugness…

texas is the leader in repeat teen pregnancies…

my favorite part of the whole article was the quote by the superintendent of the school from the article:

“In a Lufkin High School class for pregnant students, the curriculum includes information on birth control, something required by law, said Superintendent Roy Knight. “Our primary focus is on abstinence; however, we still work to be proactive to prevent further unplanned pregnancies,” Knight said.”

notice how this class is for pregnant students.  so, if they are teaching anything about contraceptives, too little too late doesn’t quite seem to cover it.  if they are so proactive, then why are they only teaching this to the pregnant students?  i also can’t help but wonder if any of the boys involved are privy to such education, or is it only the students who you can see were sluttin it up in the pick up who need a lesson?  ya know, cuz girls climb up on top of themselves and get pregnant.  i forgot, though, that birth control is really the girl’s responsibility, silly me.  is it just me, or should they have said “we work to be slut shamingly reactive”?

trailer park feminist also had some great insights on Mr. Knight’s claims that birth control is included in the curriculum by law.  i love calling people out and throwing down my bullshit card, and i can see she does too.

so, when exactly is this whole abstinence only thing gonna start working?  seems to me that if we really wanted to curb teen pregnancy, and give these girls a shot at productive adulthood, maybe we should start giving them the whole story, and maybe a box of condoms too.
