Long story short: I have a half sister on my biological father’s side (apparently, he doesn’t talk to any of his four children, so at least we all have that in common). I also have two half brothers that I met once as a child, but I have just become acquainted with my sister.
She just started her first semester of college. She is going into Nursing, with an emphasis on Hispanic Health and Human Services. In a recent conversation I found out that she has all kinds of Proggy/Femmy tendencies (which is not surprising, knowing her mom), though I don’t know to what extent. I want to send her a Feminist Big Sister Care Package, and I need some advice on what that should entail. So, I am turning to you, internets. What would you send in a Feminist Big Sister Care Package?
The Red Queen has already suggested The Hotheaded Paisan, which I haven’t read yet myself.
What else?

I’d send Bitch and Make/shift magazines!
I should totally send her Bitch (and get myself a subscript, which I have never yet done and wanted to). I haven’t heard of Make/shift.
Wow really?? Make/shift is great. bfp has written for them, and Black Amazon I think, and others you would know from the ‘sphere. It’s different than Bitch, it’s a bit more centered on womanist/feminist WOC, it’s a bit more eclectic. I like it a lot. It’s also new, they’re only on like their fifth issue I think, so I’m looking forward to watching it grow. Bitch was the first mag I ever bought more than one edition of and the first I ever subscribed to, make/shift was the second and they’re still the only two.

It looks really awesome. We have some expenses to catch up from w/ our recent travels, but after that, I think I might treat myself, and my sis.
The book, Cunt, by Inga Muscio! A Life-changing book about respecting our bodies and reclaiming our cunts. Plus, it has a huge index in the back listing all kinds of helpful resources.
I have and have read that book. Some of it I really felt, some of it not so much…but I did really like it. That is a good suggestion.
I’m a feminist big sister but to a boy, so it’s a little bit harder.
Still, I’d send some music, like Babes in Toyland (or maybe something a little “tamer”), some chocolate, and some alternative menstrual products. I would also (as I try to do for my brother) find out any un-encouraged interests she has and encourage them in some way.
